Accepted: 21/10/2014 Abstract Aflatoxins are toxic metabolites of fungi mainly Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, which cause immune system suppression, liver cancer or even death. In present study different doses of gamma irradiation were used to reduce aflatoxin content in peanut, and the effect of irradiation on shelf life and seed viability was evaluated. The irradiation dose for total reduction of aflatoxins was optimized. Results obtained in this study indicate that a dose of 3 and 5 kGy reduced total background counts of fungi from 9.5±1.2x10cfu/g to 20.0±5.0 and 4.0±1.0 cfu/g respectively and increased the shelf life of peanut by 2 months. Germination percentage and root and shoot length were measured to determine the effects of various irradiation doses on the peanut seed germination. There was marked reduction in germination percentage at 1.0 kGy, whereas at 3 kGy dose the peanut seeds completely lost their viability. Root and shoot lengths were found more sensitive to the gamma irradiation than the germination percentages.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate genetic diversity in 72 peanut accessions (Arachis hypogaea L.), which introduced from seed bank of Australia in training and seed production research center of oilseeds company, Iran. Twelve major morphological traits recorded during 2013 growing season using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that the differ...
متن کاملEfficacy of Ozone to Reduce Fungal Spoilage and Aflatoxin Contamination in Peanuts
Peanuts (Arachis hypogea L.) are important substrates for the growth and subsequent aflatoxin production by different members of Aspergillus. The aims of the current study were to identify the toxigenic fungi associated with peanut and to study the effect of ozone gaseous (O3) on fungal spoilage and aflatoxin concentration in peanuts. Peanut samples were collected from three Egyptian governorat...
متن کاملEffect of hydropriming on morphological and physiological performance of aged groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seeds
Low viability and poor vigour due to seed deterioration are major problems for successful agricultural production. In this experiment, the ability of hydropriming to ameliorate seed deterioration damage was studied in groundnut. Groundnut seeds were subjected to accelerated ageing for 96 hours at 40 °C and then hydroprimed at 25 °C for 6, 12 and 18 hours. Regardless of duration, hydropriming si...

Groundnut seed priming was performed with an aqueous solution of gibberellic acid (GA3) (0, 50, 100, and 150 ppm for 18h) and accelerated aging (96 h) was done prior to drought stress (-0.4, -0.6, and -0.8 MPa), then recovered. Investigated traits were germination percentage, mean germination time, germination rate, vigor index, plumule length, radicle length, seedling length, malondialdehyde c...
متن کاملUV-C Irradiation Effect on Seed Germination, Seedling Growth and Productivity of Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)
Irradiation is a method that given to substances or plants or plant materials with radiation. During irradiation the high energy radiation pass through the matter and cause ionizing or electric or magnetic disturbances that affect the internal structure or matter of plants. During the past few decades, the ozone reduction problem has stimulated considerable research on higher plant responses to...
